Europe 1992. Villeneuve-le-Roi near Paris is where they meet: Virgil who fled Moldova in the underbody of a lorry, Chachal from Bangladesh and the Somalian Assan who is trying to save his daughter Iman from civil war and oppression. They come as the advance guard of many who will cross Europe’s borders in the following years. As „Sans-Papiers“ the four of them make their way in France, share their fate, experience abuse, exploitation and contempt, but also solidarity and humanity.

PRESS

Die Fremden” (Gerrit Wustmann, der Freitag from 18.12.2017)

- Les Échoués, the first novel by Pascal Manoukian, foreign correspondent and General Director of the Capa Agency, shines a new light on immigration and on the men and women for whom exile is nothing less than a matter of survival.
Victoria Garain, Le Point.fr

- The migrant is a ghost. He melts into the darkness. He must live „away from the limelight, at the edge, behind the curtain“. He is well aware that he is expendable and that to survive he must hide. ‚Les échoués‘ is the novel the 21st century would rather not see.
Doan Bui, Le Nouvel Observateur

- Virgil the Bulldozer; Assan the brave and Chanchal the Poet will inhabit our thoughts for a long time.
Marianne Payot, L‘Express Livres

- This story is told in that most human of forms: from the inside. There where you find what no camera or third party can grasp.
