“Living, of itself, is not enough. One needs a destiny…” Albert Camus – The Rebel

Heddy, a piano teacher living alone in Berlin, is encouraged by her friend Pia to fly to her homeland Iran after decades of being away. In Teheran she follows her memories to the summers of her childhood and her young lover – a student who had to leave the country in November 1979 when the American Embassy in Teheran was occupied. It was not the will of fate that Heddy’s letters to her boyfriend should reach their designated recipient, yet that same fate, decades later, brings her to a point where, perhaps, the story might continue.

The novel describes perceptively and thoughtfully the life course of the Iranian “Lost Generation” which was branded by revolution, war and emigration. Also – embedded in a moving story of family and love – are those events which ended with the fall of one of the oldest monarchies in the world.

„You will remember yourself, you understand? When you are once again in Teheran, when you once again come up against your past, Heddy, you will remember!“
