Abbas Maroufi was bon in Tehran in 1957. He studied dramatic literature at the University Theran, but had to interrupt his studies from 1980 to 1982 due to closure of the university because of the revolution. In 1990, he founded the magazine Gardun (firmament) which is a publication about literature and zeitgeist resonating critical notes. However, the magazine was soon prohibited and Maroufi was sentenced by the court of press affaires for “insulting” the Islamic fundamental values. After international protests, Abbas Maroufi could leave Iran in 1996 and come to Germany. At present, he lives in Berlin with his family, where he founded the book store Hedayat.
