Gerrit Wustmann: World Literature

"Where world literature is written on it, Western literature is in it." Regardless of whether it's reviews in the features section, university seminars, lists of the 'most important' works or reading material in school lessons: the literary work of authors from Asia, Africa and Latin America is mostly left out – out of ignorance and many other reasons.
In his knowledgeable essay, the writer and journalist Gerrit Wustmann shows not only what we are missing out on as a result, but also how one-sided reading distorts our view of the world.
A lot has happened from Goethe's concept of 'world literature' to today's everyday exchange in a globalized literary scene. But the still one-sided use of the term also shows that we still have a long way to go.
