Stumbling blocks in Bremen. Searching for biographical traces – North Bremen region

The Stolpersteine ​​project has existed in Bremen since 2004; since then, 583 stumbling blocks have been embedded in the sidewalk. In front of the last place of residence or work, they commemorate the victims of National Socialist tyranny. The concise inscriptions on the stumbling blocks are the result of an extensive biographical search for clues. The Stolpersteine ​​Bremen project will publish biographies of all memorial stones in district-related volumes. The volume Region Nord contains for the first time a compilation of biographical portraits of various groups of victims. The lives of the victims are documented in the book. It also contains articles on the history of North Bremen, the Jewish cemetery in Schwanewede, the destruction of the synagogue in Aumund and the culture of remembrance and remembrance in North Bremen. The biographical search for traces and the intentions that Gunter Demnig associates with his project are explained in introductory articles. A timeline, a selection of literature on the Nazi era and a glossary of key terms and content complete the range of information. The book includes a city map with circular routes for a personal search for traces of the stumbling blocks in Bremen-Nord. The respective biographical portraits can be found immediately in the book via a numbering system and enable the historical background and life story to be deduced on site.
