Widad Nabi: Nearing thirty, ...kiss me (bilingual)

Widad Nabi's lyrics tell of insatiable longing, of loss, of pleasure and pain, of the search for human closeness. They usually sing about a moment of nostalgia, tenderness and love. Her poems, which are poetically closely intertwined with the events of recent years in Syria, correspond to the attitude towards life of many people who are fleeing. The feeling of alienation in her poetry is a metaphor for modern man's uprooting and homelessness. Exile has become the fate of many Syrians, but often also their salvation. "Exile saved me from annihilation,” she once said.

Now in a bilingual edition with the original Arabic text and the German translation by Suleman Taufiq.

Widad Nabi: Nearing thirty, ...kiss me (bilingual)

Description

Reading sample:

Nobody reads poetry in the morning

Nobody reads poetry in the morning.

The bird leaves its nest

to snap a photo with the barbed wire on the border.

The lover lays his head on the rusty station bench

he thinks of his beloved whom he forgot in his pocket.

The soldier fills the city with the dust of his military shoes,

poetry goes with me up the escalator into solitude.

And smiles.

Nobody reads poetry in the morning

Nobody reads poetry in the morning

The bird leaves its nest to take a photo

With barbed wire borders

The lover puts his head on the rusting station seat

And he thinks about the hand of his girlfriend who remained forgotten in his pocket

The soldier fills the city with the dust of his military boots

As poetry goes up the escalator with me to solitude

smiling
