Abbas Maroufi

Biography

Abbas Maroufi was born in Tehran in 1957. He studied dramatic literature at the University of Tehran, but had to interrupt his studies from 1980 to 1982 due to the revolution-related closure of the university. In 1990, Maroufi founded the magazine Gardun (Heavenly Vault), a publication about literature and zeitgeist that also sounded critical tones. However, the magazine was soon banned and its editor convicted by the Press Affairs Court of "offending" fundamental Islamic values. After international protests, Abbas Maroufi was able to leave Iran in 1996 and come to Germany. In Berlin he founded the bookshop Hedayat.

Symphony of the Dead

In his work, first published in 1989 Symphony of the Dead Abbas Maroufi tells the story of a family in south-west Iran in the middle of the last century.
The focus is on the second eldest son Aidin, just like his twin sister Aida, he becomes a victim of traditional conditions. Opposite him is his brother Urhan. While Aidin tries to outgrow his narrow-minded environment, Urhan emulates his conservative father.
