Berzan Kejo

Biography

Berzan Kejo was an artist, filmmaker, media designer, author and certified 3D game developer. Kejo was born in Al Kamishly, Syria in 1960 as a stateless Kurd. In 1986 he fled Syria and had to spend four years in asylum accommodation in Germany. He received political asylum, but also experienced racism and exclusion in Germany and could not remain silent about these experiences. His themes were flight and its consequences, life in exile and the search for home. In 2016 he proclaimed the “New Degenerate Art” in order to give these issues a voice in the cultural world as those affected and commented on them in detail in his artist catalog of the same name. In his novel Ro Jîn - Sonne des Lebens he worked through part of his past. Kejo passed away on January 12, 2021.

Dilo is 16 years old when he leaves his hometown of Qamishlo. He is looking for a better life, flees the strictness of his parents' home, flees the hostilities and discrimination that he has to experience as a Kurd in Syria. His destination is Paris, which for him is synonymous with inner and outer freedom. Young as he is, he has no idea what lies ahead, although he grew up with the history of the Kurds and their constant distress.
