Ibtisam Barakat is an American-Palestinian author who grew up in Ramallah and currently resides in the United States. She advocates creative ways of conflict resolution and Palestinian-Israeli dialogue. The children's book The Lilac Girl (al-Fatat al-lilakiyya) won the 2020 Sheikh Zayed Book Award in the Children's Book category.
WithThe Lilac Girl we welcome another winner of the most important literary prize in the Arab world, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award, to our program. The Palestinian-American author Ibtisam Barakat tells the story of the expulsion from and the loss of one's homeland, not just 70 years ago in Israel, but still taking place worldwide in various regions and for various reasons. Sinan Hallak's forgiving illustrations and touching ending bring this difficult subject to a kid-friendly level.
