The Guru Who Doesn't Talk: Treasure Hunts in India
by Jens Ulrich Davids
"So listen up. Have another beer and stay as amazed as you look. You've probably never heard of this treasure I'm talking about. Or just from afar. Maybe it doesn't even exist, maybe it's just a white elephant, a phantasmagoria, a mirage in the oriental wishful sky. But then, if he doesn't exist, how do you explain that a reputable community of heirs who believe they are entitled to him has been trying to get their hands on him for a solid hundred years?"
Ten people, women and men from Germany, make up a tour group that is touring through southern India in a bus. But what seemed harmless is gradually becoming something else. The oil painting that Jonas brought back from Bremen is a secret. There are attempts to steal it. What makes it so desirable? Does Ina, the tour guide that Jonas still desires, know more? Or is The Guru-Who-Not-Speaking behind it? Who is he? does it even exist?
Soul-hunting is interwoven with treasure-hunting. Longings are projected into India with its mythical tales and enigmatic people. The real India through which they drive challenges them to reflect on their desires and sensitivities. They think and talk about it, sometimes cleverly and cheerfully, sometimes thoughtfully melancholically. They become increasingly involved in a tangible adventure that is reaching its explosive climax. Does it capture the notion of cosmic infinity here?
