Book premiere "Gestalt im Schatten"

The publisher Madjid Mohit will moderate, Jürgen Meyhöfer will provide background information on the book and Thomas Roth will read from the novel.

Figure in the Shadow is about the man who accompanied Alexander von Humboldt on his journey to South America. While the latter is generally well known, the French doctor and botanist Aimé Bonpland was deliberately overlooked in Germany. However, the naming of a mountain peak in the Andes, a lunar crater, an asteroid and a plant species after him bear witness to his outstanding role as a natural scientist. Bonpland had a significant influence on the Enlightenment during the French Revolution and was later Napoleon's botanist and director of his castle in Malmaison. Together with Humboldt he explored tropical South America and towards the end of his life spent many years in the south of this continent, first highly honored and then neglected in Buenos Aires, many years as a prisoner of the dictator of Paraguay and finally as the owner of mate plantations in Brazil and Argentina. The author describes the fate of this extraordinary person sensitively and with a sense of drama in a novel that is equally gripping in terms of content and literature. Using cultivated poetic language, the novel, which was published in its second edition in Brazil a few months after its publication, combines a carefully researched and fact-rich narrative with thoughtful, almost philosophical reflections on life.
