In his debut novel, Birds of the Night, Manoukian focuses the camera on people struggling to survive. Because they lack one thing: papers.

Europe 1992. They meet in Villeneuve-le-Roi near Paris: Virgil, who fled Moldova in the underbody of a truck, Chanchal from Bangladesh and the Somali Assan, who is trying to save his daughter Iman from civil war and oppression. They come as the vanguard of the many who will cross Europe's borders in the years to come. As “sans-papiers” the four of them struggle through in France, form a community of destiny, experience mistreatment, exploitation and contempt, but also solidarity and humanity.
