reading Symphony of the Dead by Abbas Maroufi
Translated from the Persian by Anneliese Ghahraman-Beck
While Aidin reacts to his father's strictness with rebellion, his brother Urhan is compliant. Although the two completely different sons soon go their separate ways, the family bond brings them together again under dramatic circumstances. As soon as they both live back in their parents' house, tensions rise between Aidin and Urhan. Tradition and progress as well as a tender love story are the central themes of Abbas Maroufi's family drama, which has parallels to Cain and Abel. This year, the first published in 1989 Symphony of the Dead republished by Sujet Verlag.
Abbas Maroufi fled Iran in the 1990s as a politically persecuted person. He lives in Berlin, where he runs the “Hedayat” bookstore, which specializes in Persian literature.
