taz Salon: City of Literature Bremen – What’s that supposed to mean?
27. February um 19:00 - 20:30
This event is presented by the taz at the Kulturzentrum Lagerhaus Bremen e.V. – Culture, Ecology, Migration.
City of Literature Bremen:
UNESCO has declared Bremen as the 53rd city in the world as a City of Literature.
A great success, especially for a city without an outstanding literary heritage - in which almost one in ten adults is considered functionally illiterate.
But: What does Bremen do with it? What follows from the title? Because, even though UNESCO has been awarding it for 20 years, its effect is almost unexplored. And the previous ways of filling it with content differ greatly from one another. Is the title only intended for the city's external representation and marketing? Or does it mean something for its citizens?
What duties does it entail? Can it promote the production and perception of the local literary scene - or is it in danger of being even more overwritten by lighthouse events? Is it possible to better anchor an inclusive concept of literature? Which voices are heard and promoted - and what do we not accept as literature?
We discuss the opportunities, risks and side effects of the award with these guests at the taz Salon Bremen:
Martina Burandt, author and head of the Bremen Association of German Writers in ver.di
Madjid Mohit, founder of Sujet Verlag
Maimuna Salla, founder of the Black Children's Library
Alexandra Tacke, cultural authority
Moderation: Benno Schirrmeister, taz nord editor
The event is free, but participation on site is only possible with a pre-booked ticket Ticket possible.
Alternatively there is one Livestream on Youtube.
