Inge Buck: Prague Diary

Prague - a place of memory and longing, even for those who have never been there.
For her new book, Inge Buck explores the different sides of this city. Those that can be found in every travel guide, but also inconspicuous pages, off the beaten path and the everyday life of the people living here. Old and new Prague, the facades of houses and the baroque churches, from whose stained glass windows the legends of the saints shine. It is dedicated to the relationship between the Czechs and the Germans, as well as the Czech language with its melodious sound.

Description

Prague - a place of memory and longing, even for those who have never been there. How do I approach this city, how do I explore it to write about it?

Many roads lead to Prague, off the beaten path, straight ahead with a guide or on virtual walking tours through old and new Prague. Where streets, alleys and bridges are reminiscent of artists, poets or composers, the Vltava, a calm river, does not let you look down. Where house facades along the embankment overflow with rampant stone plants and fruit, in baroque churches the legends of the saints shine from the glass windows: a flood of images of past and present beauty.

Where I meet the story, the relation of the Czechs to the Germans, the Germans to the Czechs, where Lidice is 22 km away from Prague.

Where I explore the inconspicuous places, beyond tourist attractions, the everyday life of the people in the parks, on the tram, in the small shops in the neighborhood. And spell the Czech names on streets, squares and train stations, hear the melodious sound of the Czech language, its hard and soft rhythm.

Gunther Gerlach's brush drawings accompany you through the paths and places, open up the reader's own visual world, weave and frame with free pictorial associations.

Reviews and press:

Last September, the author – most of you know and appreciate her as a storyteller and poet – stayed in Prague at the invitation of the Prague House of Literature the Czech capital. "Variatio delectat" is a venerable Latin form of speech that welcomes variety. (...) more

Weser courier:

With her new book, the Bremen author Inge Buck pays tribute to a city that, as she experienced it herself, causes euphoria even in those who have never been there: Prague. In her "Prague Diary" she collects thoughts on her trip to the Golden City as a scholarship holder of the Prague House of Literature for German-speaking Authors last year. Just like in a diary, peppered with poetry and dark brush drawings by the artist Gunther Gerlach. (...) more
