20 years of stumbling blocks in Bremen
Against Forgetting – An Art and Remembrance Project
6:00 p.m. (entry from 5:30 p.m.)
In September 2003, the Cologne artist Gunter Demnig presented his Stolperstein project in Bremen, and the following year it was taken over here. Since then, almost 800 stumbling blocks have been laid on our city's sidewalks. In total, there are currently over 100,000 memorial stones in Europe.
This evening we will report on the beginnings of the project and on coming to terms with the fates of those victims who are remembered by the stumbling blocks. The collaboration of many Bremen actors is made visible, and biographical examples are presented that represent the various victim groups who suffered under Nazi rule in Bremen.
The project “20 years of stumbling blocks in Bremen. Biographical Search for Traces", edited by Barbara Johr and Peter Christoffersen, was published in 7 volumes by Sujet Verlag Bremen from 2013 to 2022.
The evening is accompanied by the choir IntoNation the Bremen University of Applied Sciences.
