Reading "I'm not a foreigner, that's just my name"

12.05.2022 at 20:00

On Thursday 12.05. will Amir Shaheen in the Bookstore world of books from his novel I'm not a foreigner, that's just my name read. Start of the event is at 8 p.m.

When a German native speaker has an Arabic name, it raises legitimate questions in everyday life. If someone like Amir Shaheen is also a writer and publishes books, well, then it makes sense to want to know whether his texts will be translated – into German! Amir Shaheen describes pointedly and wittily what his name alone is able to trigger in his bio-German fellow human beings in this country. He describes his experiences in an entertaining and extremely amusing way. At the same time, he invites you to take a critical look at widespread pigeonhole thinking and what is supposedly taken for granted, to examine expectations and prejudices, to become aware of what is often only well-meant and also of the omnipresent scissors in the head...

Amir Shaheen, born in Lüdenscheid in 1966, studied German, English, theatre, film and television studies. The trained publishing clerk works as an author, editor and PR editor and writes poetry, prose, satirical material and columns. He has been publishing literary texts since 1989 and has made a name for himself in particular as a poet. His poems have appeared in numerous anthologies, magazines and on the radio, and have been included in Der Große Conrady - Das Buch deutscher Armen (The Book of German Poems). Member of PEN Germany.
Published by Sujet Verlag I am not a foreigner, my name is just that (2020; read by the author as an MP3 audio book in 2022), Pack up twice to the south terrace (2013, extended new edition 2020), the column volume Finally (2012/2013) and the poetry volumes Everywhere and Tomorrow (2012), Footnotes and Paper Bags (2016) and Traces of Light (2019). It contains the poem "Sediment", for which he received the postpoetry.nrw prize in 2018. In 2020 he was nominated for the Literature Prize of the city of Nettetal.

We look forward to a large attendance!
